Tipp boss stays with same side that defeated Antrim

Tipperary manager Peter Creedon has retained the same 15 players as his side look to pull off an Ulster double this weekend.

Tipp face beaten Ulster finalists Down in Clones tomorrow (throw-in 4pm), just a week after they ended Antrim's participation in the Championship with a 0-10 to 0-8 defeat.

Alan Maloney replaced Brian Mulvihill for the Antrim game and the Rockwell Rovers free-taker went on to be the top scorer with 0-6.

Tipperary and Down have never met before at Championship level, and Creedon's in-form charges could become history makers as the first Tipp team to reach the All-Ireland quarter-final stage.

The last time the counties clashed in competitive fare was in the 2010 Allianz League when they drew 0-14 to 1-11 in Newy.

The previous year, Down won a Division 3 group game in Thurles by 0-18 to 1-9, but Tipp were victorious in the league decider in Pearse Park - winning 0-18 to 1-14 after extra-time.

Playing Down represents a step up in class from the three teams Tipp have already beaten in this summer's qualifiers, Offaly, Wexford and Antrim, according to Creedon.

"We're confident enough in our own ability but we do realise we've beaten three Division 3 teams to get to this stage," he told the Irish News.

"We were in the same division as those teams so we shouldn't be patting ourselves on the back.

"We're jumping up a notch to Down and I'm sure they will regroup and refocus on the All-Ireland series because the Championship probably doesn't start for the big teams until the quarter-finals. That's when the real serious business starts."

TIPPERARY (SFC v Down): Paul Fitzgerald; Andrew Morrissey, Paddy Codd, Ciarán McDonald; Brian Fox, Robbie Kiely, Alan Campbell; George Hannigan, Hugh Coghlan; Richie Ryan, Philip Austin, Donagh Leahy; Alan Maloney, Peter Acheson, Michael Quinlivan.
