Meehan and Armstrong return for Galway

Connacht's hopes of mounting a challenge for the Connacht SFC title this summer have been boosted by the return from injury of Michael Meehan and Sean Armstrong.

Meehan has been plagued by injuries over the past two years. He had to have an operation on the dislocated shoulder he sustained against Meath last July and also underwent surgery twice on a troublesome ankle.

But the Caltra forward has successfully come through his first appearance in a Galway jersey since that All-Ireland qualifier - he lined out in the second half of a challenge game against Laois over the weekend.

Galway manager Alan Mulholland remains hopeful that Meehan could play some part in his side's Connacht Championship quarter-final against Roscommon on May 20.

Meehan was also joined in the Tribesmen's attack by the fit-again Sean Armstrong, who has recovered from the leg injury he picked up in training in March.

"Both Sean and Michael came on for the second half for us against Laois and made an impact," explained Mulholland.

"They both scored from play. Their return is a big positive for us ahead of the Roscommon match."

One player who definitely will not be featuring at Dr Hyde Park in three weeks' time is former All-Ireland winning wing forward Matthew Clancy.

The Oughterard ace, who did not play for Mulholland's charges this year, has decided to retire from inter-county football after an 11-year run.

Clancy lives and works in Dublin as an engineer and got married at Christmas. He said 'the time is right for me to finish up' and that he felt he couldn't give the necessary commitment to the panel this year.
