Skehill to miss remainder of League campaign

Galway goalkeeper James Skehill has played his last league game this year after dislocating his shoulder during last Sunday's defeat to Waterford.

The Cappataggle hurler is set to undergo medical assessment on Thursday, but he is expected to be sidelined for three to four weeks.

That means he will miss Galway's final Division 1A match away to Kilkenny on Sunday. Depending on that result, the Tribesmen could reach the league semi-finals or be involved in a relegation play-off with either Dublin or Waterford.

Skehill injured himself when trying to stop Waterford full-forward Shane Walsh from scoring the only goal of the clash at Pearse Stadium.

His absence leaves Craughwell's Jamie Ryan and Fergal Flannery of Padraig Pearses battling it out for the Galway number 1 jersey.

Previewing the Kilkenny game, Galway manager Anthony Cunningham told the Irish Examiner: "It is a huge challenge but that's what we are here for, to go at them.

"It will be a huge challenge at Nowlan Park and we'll prepare well for it during the week and look forward to next weekend.

"For young players in a team that is developing, you can't beat experience, or big day matches like league semi-final or matches like Sunday.

"You can't coach experience, it all comes with playing these matches and those are the positions we want to be in."
