Ó Flatharta let go by Galway

Tomás Ó Flatharta's reign as manager of the Galway senior footballers is over, after club delegates voted for a change of management.

The end of Ó Flatharta's short tenure was confirmed last night by a statement from the Galway County Board.

"Club delegates last night ratified a decision made by the Football Board executive on Tuesday evening not to grant another year to the present senior football management team," it read.

"It followed an end-of-year review by the selection committee and the manager. The clubs will now be circulated with nomination papers for the election of a new manager in the coming weeks."

Ó Flatharta was appointed for a three-year term (with an annual review) last October, succeeding Armagh legend Joe Kernan who also only lasted one season in the role.

The Tribesmen were relegated from Division 1 of the Allianz Football League this year, winning just one match, and they endured disappointing Championship defeats to Mayo and Meath.

The Kerryman, who previously managed Westmeath, had expressed a desire to stay on, but speculation grew in recent days that Galway would look for a new man.

Seán Óg De Paor and Martin McNamara, both former All-Ireland winners with Galway, were Ó Flatharta's selectors during his time out west.
