Murphy named at full-forward in Rebel attack

Nicholas Murphy will start at full-forward for Cork when they take on Connacht champions Mayo at Croke Park on Sunday (throw-in 4pm).

Murphy, who has spent most of his career at midfield, has been chosen to replace the injured Daniel Goulding for the All-Ireland SFC quarter-final.

The Carrigaline clubman's inclusion is the only change to the team that started last weekend's qualifier victory over Down.

Murphy has recovered from a hamstring injury to slot in beside Donncha O'Connor and Paul Kerrigan, who were the Rebels' best forwards the last day.

Graham Canty has failed to force his way back into the starting line-up, with stand-in captain Michael Shields positioned again at full-back.

Fiachra Lynch, who was gunning for his first Championship start, will be on the bench along with Canty, Mark Collins, Ray Carey and Denis O'Sullivan, who were all used as substitutes against Down.

Conor Counihan's decision to bring in Murphy may have been swayed by his performances as Cork's target man against Monaghan and Dublin in last year's Allianz Football League.

The Rebels will be hoping to maintain their 100% record in All-Ireland quarter-finals. They have won all seven of their previous quarter-final ties between 2002 and 2010.

CORK (SFC v Mayo): Alan Quirke; Eoin Cotter, Michael Shields (capt), Eoin Cadogan; Noel O'Leary, John Miskella, Paudie Kissane; Alan O'Connor, Aidan Walsh; Fintan Goold, Paddy Kelly, Pearse O'Neill; Donncha O'Connor, Nicholas Murphy, Paul Kerrigan.
