London to host Waterford in Qualifiers
London's reward for ending their Championship drought is a home match against Waterford in the second round of the All-Ireland SFC qualifiers.
The draw for the next round of the qualifiers took place in Castlebar this evening, with the teams being drawn out by Connacht GAA President Paddy Naughton and Mayo legend Willie Joe Padden.
In bowl A were the eight beaten provincial semi-finalists, including Galway, Tyrone and Kildare who all lost today.
Bowl B contained the winners of yesterday’s eight first round qualifiers, among them Paul Coggins’ London side who shocked Fermanagh in the early throw-in at Ruislip.
The first pairing drawn out was Limerick and Offaly, two sides who competed in Division 3 of the Allianz League this year. Offaly beat the Shannonsiders 2-10 to 1-12 when they met at Newcastlewest in February.
Down, who squeezed past Clare, will have home advantage against Leitrim, while Kildare, following their late defeat to Dublin, face a Leinster derby with Laois at O’Moore Park.
The Lilywhites beat Laois on a 1-13 to 1-11 scoreline at Newbridge in this season’s league, and had a 2-18 to 0-9 victory over the O’Moore men in the 2009 Leinster semi-final.
After an unsuccessful Ulster title defence, Tyrone will be hoping to bounce back strongly away to Longford who will be seeking an Ulster double. Glenn Ryan’s men were impressive winners over Cavan last night.
Wicklow, who saw off the challenge of Sligo, will be on the road to Armagh - the Orchard men have a disappointing recent record in the qualifiers, having lost in round 1 in 2009 and round 3 last year.
The Meath v Galway tie will draw much media attention, especially given the manner of the Royals' five-goal dismissal of Louth last night. It is a repeat of the 2001 All-Ireland final and the counties also met in the 2007 qualifiers when Meath beat the Tribesmen 2-14 to 1-14 in Portlaoise.
Following their exit from the Leinster Championship, Carlow will be the visitors to Casement Park to play Antrim, while London, with home advantage, will fancy their chances of overcoming Waterford.
The Deise will be playing Division 4 football next year along with the Exiles, and when the sides meet in the English capital next month, it will be five weeks since Waterford’s Munster semi-final loss to Cork.
The second round qualifier games are scheduled to be played on Saturday, July 9.
Full details of the throw-in times and venues will be announced by the GAA's Central Competitions Control Committee tomorrow.
