Jason Doherty, one of Mayo's most impressive performers during the recent Allianz Football League, will make his first Championship start in the county's Connacht SFC opener against London.

James Horan's men get their summer campaign underway at Ruislip (throw-in 3pm), with the winners facing Galway at the semi-final stage on Sunday, June 26.

Mayo will field six Championship newcomers this weekend - goalkeeper Robert Hennelly, brothers Alan and Richie Feeney in defence, midfielders James Gibbons and James Kilcullen and corner forward Doherty.

Ballinrobe's Donal Vaughan returns at centre-back after an eight-month absence due to a groin injury, while corner forward Trevor Howley from Knockmore has also earned a recall.

Howley has recovered from the ankle problem which left him sidelined for four months, and Ger Cafferkey has shrugged off a hamstring injury to start at left corner back.

Ronan McGarrity (Achilles tendon), Keith Higgins (knee), Seamus O'Shea and Neil Douglas miss out through injury, but the westerners' bench has been bolstered by the returning Trevor Mortimer and Dermot Geraghty, who are hoping to transfer their club form onto the inter-county stage.
