Willie Hyland's injury-time goal earned Laois a 3-16 to 3-13 Allianz Hurling League Division 2 victory over Clare, before an attendance of 300 spectators at O'Moore Park in Portlaoise.

Laois got off to the perfect start with a fourth minute goal from John Brophy, but a Conor McGrath major, nine minutes later, brought Clare back into contention.

Laois led by 1-09 to 1-06 at half-time but Clare found an extra gear on the restart, with Darach Honan's 38th-minute goal giving them a slender 2-07 to 1-09 lead.

Jonathan Clancy netted Clare's third goal, but Laois showed no signs of wilting. Owen Holohan found the net on the hour mark to cut the deficit to two points, before Hyland's tenth point of the evening tied the contest at 2-16 to 3-13 with five minutes left.

Defences stood firm in the closing stages, but Hyland, following up on a long ball from Joe Fitzpatrick, squeezed through for an injury-time goal to give Laois their third win of the campaign.

Earlier in the same division, Carlow ran out 2-15 to 1-14 winners over Westmeath at Dr. Cullen Park.

Eddie Byrne was among the goalscorers for the hosts, with defenders Alan Corcoran and Shane and Dwyane Kavanagh also performing strongly for Carlow.

Meanwhile, Mayo picked up a 3-18 to 1-10 victory over Sligo in Division 3B at Markievicz Park.

Mayo led by 2-12 to 0-06 at the break. Keith Raymond (1-07) netted a goal for Sligo on the restart, but Mayo completed their hat-trick in the second half as they finished with a 14-point winning margin.
