Kingdom hurlers win out tight affair

Kerry 2-23 Down 3-16

Kerry 2-23 Down 3-16

Kerry's hurlers showed plenty of steel as they fought their way for a famous Allianz NHL Division 2 victory over Down at Fitzgerald Stadium.

The Kingdom team had lost out to another Ulster outfit, Antrim, in their opening league game, so they were doubly determined to get one over on Down.

And it showed as they burst into a 2-16 to 1-05 half-time lead against an injury-hot Down side. The hosts' goals came from Aidan Boyle and John Egan.

The outstanding Darragh O'Connell fired over 0-07, including two efforts from play. Gareth Johnson converted a penalty for Down's first half major.

The Mourne men had the wind at their backs in the second period and goals from Connor Mageean and Scott Nicholson, in the final five minutes, saw them storm back into contention.

But Kerry, who were roared on by a vocal crowd, stood firm to secure a deserved win.

Free-taker O'Connell led the scoring with 0-10 (0-07f).
