Down bow out of Kehoe Cup

High-scoring encounters were the order of the day across the Kehoe Cup and Shield competitions, with Wicklow, DCU, Meath, GMIT, Louth and Trinity College all registering wins.

In the Kehoe Cup, Wicklow posted a 2-15 to 2-9 win over neighbours Kildare at Rathdrum. The visitors led by 2-3 to 0-3 after 15 minutes, but a John Hyland goal got Wicklow up to speed.

The sides were tied at 1-10 to 2-7 before a trio of points from Jonathan O'Neill edged Wicklow ahead inside six minutes of the restart. Eddie O'Brien settled the issue with Wicklow's second goal late on.

At DCU, the students dug deep to claim a 2-23 to 4-15 victory over Down.

DCU led by 0-13 to 2-4 at half-time, and goals from Danny Toner (2), Scott Nicholson and Gareth Johnson were not enough to overhaul them.

Meanwhile, Meath cantered clear of Roscommong to earn a 4-22 to 1-15 victory at Trim.

In a lively clash at Darver, the students of GMIT registered a 4-14 to 2-17 win over a determined Armagh side.

The Galway-Mayo college led by 2-8 to 1-9 at half-time. Declan Coulter scored Armagh's first half goal from a free. Marty Moan added a second goal for Armagh on the restart, but GMIT always held that extra edge.

In the Shield competition, Louth held out for a 1-14 to 1-9 success over Fingal at Fr. Lawless Park in Swords. Louth led by 1-6 to 0-4 at half-time, with Brian Corcoran netting their goal.

Corcoran led the charge for the Wee County side with 1-3, and Gerard Smyth (0-3, 0-2f) Diarmuid O'Sullivan (0-1), Shane Callan (0-03, 0-2f), Shane Fennell (0-3) and David Dunne (0-1) were the other Louth scorers.

Louth will meet Trinity College in the decider, after the Dublin outfit ran out 0-25 to 2-16 winners over IT Carlow in a tight tussle at Clan na nGael GAA Club in Ringsend.

The Dublin college led by 0-13 to 1-5 at half-time. Their best players on the day were Limerick's John Kelly, Kilkenny's Eamonn O'Gorman and Danny Sutcliffe of Dublin.
