Tipp call on Cahill and O'Meara

Michael Cahill and Brian O'Meara will get their first taste of Championship action when Tipperary battle it out with great rivals Cork in Sunday's Munster SHC quarter-final at Pairc Ui Chaoimh (throw-in 4pm).

O'Meara's inclusion at full-forward is the most surprising, given his lack of top level experience. The Kilruane MacDonaghs clubman won a Munster Under-21 football medal with Tipp this year, and was drafted into the senior hurling panel earlier this month.

Cahill, a two-time All-Ireland minor hurling winner, is also set to make his Championship bow at wing back. The Thurles youngster, 21, featured for Liam Sheedy's men throughout the recent National League campaign.

They are the only changes in personnel to the Tipperary team that lost last year's All-Ireland final to Kilkenny.

Cahill replaces the injured James Woodlock, with Brendan Maher joining Shane McGrath in midfield, and O'Meara comes in for the sidelined Pat Kerwick.

Sheedy has also rejigged his attack, pencilling Noel McGrath in at right half-forward and team captain Eoin Kelly at top of the right.

Incredibly, a tally of 1-19 was the winning score on the last two occasions Cork and Tipp have met in Munster quarter-finals, with Tipp triumphing last year and Cork doing so in 1982. Incidentally, the 1982 game was also played on May 30 at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

TIPPERARY (SHC v Cork): B Cummins; P Stapleton, P Maher, P Curran; D Fanning, C O'Mahony, M Cahill; B Maher, S McGrath; N McGrath, S Callanan, J O'Brien; E Kelly (capt), B O'Meara, L Corbett.
