O'Mahony extends Mayo stay

Mayo senior football manager John O'Mahony is set to continue in the position until the end of the 2011 season, after securing a two-year extension to his initial term.

Inaccurate newspaper reports surfaced last week about O'Mahony being keen to see out 'the remaining 12 months' of his reign.

However, in an interview this week with the Mayo News, the Fine Gael TD set the record straight.

"That was reported inaccurately last week. I said directly after the Meath game that I was keen to stay on as Mayo manager and nothing has changed," he said.

O'Mahony will have his current selectors, Tommy Lyons and Kieran Gallagher, back on board for the 2010 season.

The Mayo management got the players together last weekend to reflects on the good and bad points from a campaign which saw them finish mid-table in NFL Division 1, win the Connacht title and bow out of the All-Ireland Championship to Meath at the quarter-final stage.

"We had a players meeting which was a debrief on the year and on the Meath match," added O'Mahony.

"Unfortunately that game was the climax of the year for us. That meeting last weekend was the start of things again but we need some breathing space now.

"Some players are still involved in the club championship, some aren't, and some are going back to college so there's a lot of stuff to sort through before making any definite plans."
