Sammon quits as Galway boss
Liam Sammon has ended his tenure as Galway senior football manager, after informing his players and Galway County Board officials of his decision last night.
Sammon was appointed as the successor to Peter Ford back in September 2007 and was handed a three-year term, thus becoming the first Galway native to manage the county in almost ten years.
The Fr. Griffin's clubman had indicated in the aftermath of Galways recent one-point All-Ireland qualifier loss to Donegal that he would be willing to stay on for a third year, but has since changed his mind.
During his reign, Galway won a Connacht SFC title last year but failed to build on that this season - losing out to Mayo in last month's Connacht decider.
The process of appointing a new manager will begin immediately, with the Galway Football Board convening tonight at a scheduled meeting.
Sammon was part of the Galway team that won the 1966 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the last part of a terrific three in-a-row for the Tribesmen.
