One change for Galway's hurlers

Galway manager John McIntyre has made one enforced change for Sunday's All-Ireland SHC quarter-final showdown with Waterford.

Eugene McEntee takes over from the injured Shane Kavanagh at full-back.

Portumna clubman Eugene McEntee had beaten off competition from the likes of Damien McClearn and Andy Coen to replace broken hand victim Kavanagh.

McEntee, who featured in the National League win over Waterford in March, joins his club-mate and county captain Ollie Canning in the Tribesmen's full-back line.

"Shane's injury is obviously an untimely blow and like Adrian Cullinane's the previous week, it is a huge personal disappointment for him," said McIntyre, ahead of his side's third game in 15 days.

"We're missing two of our first choice six defenders for the Waterford game.

"But we're going to remain focused on the task in hand and there will be no excuses if things don't work out on Sunday."

Cullinane's absence for the qualifier win over Cork saw Ger Farragher added to the Galway midfield and Eoin Lynch reverting to a wing-back role.

The pair has retained those positions for this weekend's clash at Semple Stadium (throw-in 4pm) - the counties' ninth Championship meeting and Waterford have won all eight previous games.

Galway fans will be hoping full-forward Joe Canning can show his scoring class in Thurles once again.

The Portumna powerhouse has hit 3-36 in four Championship starts this summer, and will enjoy a potentially match-deciding free-taking duel with Waterford's Eoin Kelly.
