Murphy lands new Cork job

Double All-Ireland senior hurling medal winner Brian Murphy is one of five new appointments as Cork Co Board Games Promotions Officers.

Murphy will be joined by another Cork hurler, Martin Coleman, Cork senior footballer Paudie Kissane, Paudie O’Brien from Midleton and Kevin O’Donovan from Kilmeen/Kilbree in the new full-time initiative.

The appointments were ratified at last night’s Cork Co Board meeting at Páirc Uí Chaoimh where it was revealed that John Considine is to be the next Cork minor hurling boss.

The former Cork All-Ireland medal winner now holds the unique and unprecedented accomplishment of having held positions of county senior, U-21 and minor manager all in the one year.

He managed the U-21 side which lost to Tipperary in the Munster quarter-final, the senior team for two games against Clare and Limerick in the league after the resignation of Gerald McCarthy and he now takes the reins of the minor hurlers.

In fact he was the last man to coach a successful All-Ireland winning team back in 2001 when now Ireland rugby star Tomás O’Leary was the captain.

There was no appointment made for the position of U-21 hurling manager and the successor to Considine in that post will not be revealed now until next month when the Board re-convenes after a short summer recess.

Meanwhile, it was revealed at last night’s meeting that Cork hurling full-back Eoin Cadogan has re-joined the football panel for the forthcoming All-Ireland quarter-final.

The player won an All-Ireland U-21 medal in 2007 and played as a substitute in the All-Ireland senior semi-final victory over Meath the same year.

His versatility gives Conor Counihan and his selectors considerable options, especially with injury worries surrounding John Miskella and Anthony Lynch.

The meeting also approved a number of fixture alterations, most notably the quarter-finals of the SHC.

They will now take place on the weekend of August 8/9.
