Down minors show seniors how its done

Team captain Ross McGarry led by example as Down claimed a comfortable 11-point win over Fermanagh in Sunday's ESB Ulster MFC opener at Brewster Park.

Both sides had shown poor form in the Ulster Minor League and they struggled to break the deadlock initially in trying conditions.

David McKibben landed the opening point in the tenth-minute, which settled Down and they soon pushed into a three-point lead.

McGarry split the posts with a neat score, two minutes later, and then the talented corner forward tagged on a free.

Mark Turley's Mourne youngsters took a 0-5 to 0-1 lead into half-time, with Jonathan Feely stopping the rot for Fermanagh with a 23rd-minute free.

Chris Clarke missed a goal chance for Down, soon after the restart, but McGarry was on cue on 47 minutes to find the Fermanagh net.

He punched his way through the middle of the Ernesiders' defence, using his pace, and rifled home with his right boot.

The Warrenpoint ace was a constant threat and completed the rout for his side with a 59th-minute point.
