Wexford open league campaign in style
KERRY 1-10 WEXFORD 4-21
Wexford gained an expected win over Kerry in Allianz NHL Division 2 this afternoon, opening their league campaign in some style at Austin Stack Park.
Colm Bonnar's side established an early lead in Tralee and never looked like losing it, despite a spirited performance from the Kerry side and their defence in particular.
The Kingdom went 0-02 to 0-00 and then hit four successive wides before Shane Brick opened their account on the quarter-hour.
Diarmuid Lyng (0-02) and David Redmond increased Wexford's total before Kerry goalkeeper John Healy produced a smashing save to deny Rory Jacob a goal.
But Jacob made amends a few minutes later, opening Wexford's goal account and he tagged on a point along with another from Stephen Banville.
Brick led the Kerry scoring as they turned around at half-time with a 1-11 to 0-05 deficit to overcome.
Despite the best efforts of Brick, who finished with a 0-07 personal haul, Kerry were too many gears away from matching Wexford and Bonnar's men pulled away in the second period.
John Griffin (0-02) and Billy Brick (0-01) added the Kingdom's other points, while Kilmoyley clubman Pat Flaherty snuck through for a last-minute goal.
With Colm Farrell lording it at midfield, Wexford tightened their grip on the game and grabbed further goals through Jacob, who finished with 2-03, Eoin Quigley and Nicky Kirwan.
