GAA delivers O'Mahony doping decision

Kerry football star Aidan O'Mahony has been reprimanded by the GAA over his failure of a drugs test following last year's All-Ireland final, but will not face a playing ban.

In a statement the GAA confirmed that its anti-doping committee had delivered their decision, imposing a reprimand on O'Mahony.

However "the Kerry player will not incur any suspension arising from the matter," the statement said.

O'Mahony had been found to have had excess levels of salbutamol - a commonly-used asthma medication - in his system. The player is a lifelong asthmatic.

In its ruling, the committee said "the levels of salbutamol in Mr O Mahony’s sample were consistent with the inhalation of the substance and that its use was not intended to enhance his sporting performance or mask the use of a performance-enhancing substance."

GAA President Nickey Brennan said he was glad the matter had now been finalised, adding that it had been a very difficult time for Aidan O Mahony.

Brennan said it was "important to note that the Committee had emphasised that their decision to issue a reprimand should not be interpreted as casting any aspersion on Aidan O Mahony’s integrity".
