Wexford camogie team continue winning run
Wexford’s unbeat run in the Gala Senior Camogie Championship continued today in New Ross as the homeside withstood a late Kilkenny comeback to finish 1-20 to 4-5 winners.
A wind-assisted Kilkenny led by 2-5 to 1-7 at the interval thanks to two Máire O’Connor goals with Ursula Jacob scoring Wexford’s goal.
Jacob set Wexford off on a scoring spree in the second half as she finished with 1-5 while Kate Kelly also made a valuable contribution with six points.
Indeed Wexford could not be faulted for the majority of the closing 30 minutes such was their eagerness for scores.
Kilkenny’s first score of the half came in the 29th minute with a Marie Dargan goal and although last year’s Junior Player of the Year found the net for a second time five minutes later, it was too late for a comeback as Wexford registered a six points win.
Tipperary’s Claire Grogan finished with five points as a crowd of more than 1,000 witnessed the Premier County side account for Dublin by 0-15 to 1-7 at Parnell Park.
Last year’s All-Ireland Junior champions were managed by Tipperary native David Kennedy and they certainly gave a good account of themselves in the opening half. It was an Aisling Jordan scoring the only goal of the hour after nine minutes ensuring the homeside held a 1-5 to 0-6 interval lead.
However Tipperary pulled away in the second half with some fine point taking from Claire Grogan, Cora Hennessy, Eimear McDonnell and Louise Young.
Three Grogan points to just one for Dublin from Louise O’Hara in the 11 minute period after the restart ensured that Tipperary equalised for the second time in the game.
Once Hennessy hit her first point in the 17th minute, there was no looking back for Tipperary and they continued to take their scores well to ensure five points separated the sides at the finish and qualification hopes are kept alive.
