Wexford gain revenge over Cork in camogie
Wexford took revenge for last weekend's National Camogie League final defeat with a 4-12 to 0-14 victory over Cork in today's opening round of the Gala All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship at Ballincollig.
Once Una Leacy found the net for the first time in the second-minute, Wexford never trailed in this tie and further goals from Leacy and Michelle Hearn (2) ensured a 4-5 to 0-7 interval lead.
Cork battled hard in the second half, thanks to good stick work from Gemma O'Connor, Jennifer O'Leary and Rena Buckley, but Wexford were resilient with Sinead Kelly scoring six points while Ursula Jacob, Bronagh Furlong and Michelle O'Leary also made valuable contributions.
A strong all-round performance from Dublin ensured that the home side made a winning return to the senior ranks with a 6-7 to 1-7 win over Kilkenny in Portmarnock this afternoon.
The old saying that goals win games was certainly true with Sarah Ryan finding the back of the Kilkenny net on five occasions, including twice in the opening half. Dublin held a 3-2 to 1-6 interval lead with Catherine Doherty on target for the Kilkenny goal.
The Cats could only manage one point in the second half, from Katie Power, as Dublin held strong to finish as convincing 15 points winners.
Meanwhile in Killimor, Tipperary were 3-12 to 1-10 winners over Galway following a keenly contested affair. Tipperary led by 1-6 to 1-4 at the break with Emily Hayden the goalscorer for the Premier county side.
Although Veronica Curtin was on song for Galway, Tipperary pulled away in the second half with goals from Jill Horan and Claire Grogan.
In the Senior 'B' Championship, Galway took a 3-7 to 0-12 win over Tipperary, while Cork recorded a 0-13 to 1-4 victory over Wexford.
