Billy wants consistency

Consistency is the key that could open the door for Cork to be involved in the latter stages of the NFL, according to Cork football boss Billy Morgan.

Morgan was thrilled with the performance of his players in the victory over Tyrone but fully realises that it will have to be repeated now against Dublin on Saturday night and in the remaining three games against Mayo, Fermanagh and Limerick.

“We have to be more consistent,” he said. “It’s no good having one good game and then reverting back to a bad one again.

“I was delighted with the display and the attitude we showed against Tyrone but repeating it won’t be made easy for us by Dublin because they are in the same boat as ourselves in the league.”

Morgan is acutely aware of the importance of the trip to Parnell Park and the implications of a victory or conversely a defeat.

“We have a good enough record against Dublin and if we can win on Saturday night it could put the situation into our own hands in terms of making the semi-finals.

“We finish with games at home to Mayo and Limerick and we have Fermanagh in Clones. I am not for a second saying that they will be easy games but if we get a result on Saturday I believe we’ll give ourselves a great chance.”

Assessing the league to date, Morgan accepts that there hasn’t been enough consistency.

“We could have got something out of the Donegal and Kerry games but it’s no use saying that now. We were very good against Tyrone but maintaining that form is the key now.”

A number of key personnel are still out through injury and the Cork boss believes the return of players like Alan Quirke, Graham Canty, John Hayes, Bernie Collins, Pearse O’Neill and David Niblock will be a big boost.

“We are still missing a lot of players but the injuries are starting to clear up and I am hoping that David Niblock will be home from America shortly.

“When we have all our players available it will heighten the competition for places. But it’s first things first and that is following up on the Tyrone game and beating Dublin on Saturday night.”
