Meath take win over Roscommon

Meath were victorious in their new manager John Andrews' first competitive game in charge. They easily saw off the challenge of Roscommon, winning 3-17 to 0-5 at Páirc Tailteann.

The Royals were 13-point winners over the men from the west when these sides last met in the 2006 Christy Ring Cup, so a home win was always on the cards, but a number of players put their hands up for selection, which will have buoyed Andrews.

The fact that Roscommon had to play a Connacht League game against Galway yesterday, owing to a postponement, was far from ideal and they trailed 2-6 to 0-5 at half-time in Navan.

Peter Durnin, a new inclusion in the Meath full-forward line, netted both goals in the opening half.

Nicky Horan, one of the established players that Andrews wants to build his team around, added a third goal on 55 minutes. He finished with a personal tally of 1-3, while debutant Durnin (2-4) and Mike Cole (0-5) were also in fine form in front of goal.

For the visitors, only Conor Fallon, who battled hard at centre forward, managed to score from play.

Shane Sweeney and Mervyn Connaughton slotted over two frees each.
