Dooley keeps it in the family
Offaly's Shane Dooley, the son of former county star Joe Dooley, was on song for the hurlers of Athlone IT today as they progressed past Trinity College in the Kehoe Cup.
The midlanders had a 2-18 to 2-11 first round win with Dooley, who has been named on John McIntyre's Offaly panel for the new season, shooting 1-7 (1-4f) of his side's total.
Backed by the wind, Athlone moved 1-12 to 2-7 ahead at half-time with Dooley notching his goal from a free on the half-hour mark. Trinity's goals came from Michael Hyland (28 minutes) and Davy Kettle (35).
Free-taker Hyland did run his personal tally up to 1-4 but the Athlone defence was on top for the second half with Westmeath's Brian Smyth coming into his own at the other end.
Meath man Kevin Fagan rocketed home a late goal to confirm Athlone's passage through.
