Waterford reappoint manager McCarthy

Corkman Justin McCarthy will manage the Waterford senior hurling team next season for what will be his sixth year in charge.

McCarthy, 61, was reappointed to the position at a meeting of the Waterford County Board last night.

Nickey Cashin, Seamie Hannon and Kevin Ryan are to remain on as part of McCarthy's backroom staff, with Michael Ryan coming in as an additional selector.

McCarthy, whose coaching career began with Clare back in the 1970s, has been handed a one-year term.

His previous term officially ended after the Deise's defeat to Cork in August's All-Ireland SHC semi-final, but with former Cork boss Donal O'Grady admitting that he was not interested in the position, McCarthy's only opposition was Mount Sion's Jim Greene.

Twice previously, Greene had made unsuccessful attempts to be voted in as manager and he made it an unfortunate hat-trick last night as Passage clubman McCarthy was given the go-ahead to remain at the helm.

He will hope to get Waterford back on the winning trail in 2007 - he managed the Deise to Munster championship success in both 2002 and 2004.

Meanwhile, John Kiely has also held onto his position as Waterford senior football manager. He had his reappointment confirmed last night.
