Costello wants fans to behave

Dublin County Board CEO John Costello has called on the capital's supporters to be on their best behaviour for Saturday's All-Ireland SFC quarter-final against Westmeath.

A mass pitch invasion spoilt the end of the Dubs' Leinster final victory over Offaly last month. As hordes of fans streamed onto the Croke Park pitch, two stewards were struck and hospitalised as they attempted to hold people back.

Saturday's game is expected to attrack over 82,000 spectators and officials are wary of a repeat of last month's antics.

Addressing fans in a statement, Costello said: "Dublin supporters have a long-established reputation as being one of the best and most amiable in the country. It's important we maintain that for the game against Westmeath."

He asked fans to "contribute to the smooth running of the game by co-operating with stewards and Gardaí in and around Croke Park before, during and after the game."

With the GAA admitting that another such pitch invasion would force a rethink on their post-match presentations at headquarters, Costello insisted: "The less difficulties stewards and the Gardaí encounter, the better it will be for them to concentrate on directing traffic and assisting people who might be in need of their help or have an emergency situation.

"Along with the team, Dublin supporters have been one of the success stories of this year's football championship. Let's continue to support our team in a manner that reflects the true values of Dublin GAA."
