Wexford into first NFL D1 final
Tyrone 1-07 Wexford 1-08
It just gets better and better for Pat Roe's Wexford footballers. A David Fogarty injury-time point at rain-hit Portlaoise today saw the Modelmen earn a one-point win over Tyrone and a first ever NFL Division One final place in the county's history.
The O'Moore Park clash was the only one of four NFL semi-finals to be played as the weather played havoc with this afternoon's Gaelic games schedule.
Tyrone, lining out in their fourth consecutive league semi-final, played admirably against a strong wind in the first half and trailed 1-03 to 1-04 at the break.
League top scorer Mattie Forde - with 3-40 in his armoury before the off - kicked over an early free and kicked all but one of his side's first-half scores.
Ryan McMenamin replied for the Red Hands before a sixth-minute Enda McGinley point shot dropped invitingly short for Martin Penrose to slot to the Wexford net.
Forde rose to the occasion again, firing over a second free before goaling on 14 minutes for the Division 1B runners-up.
The AllStar raised another white flag for a 1-03 to 1-01 lead. Penrose snapped back a score and levelled it up on 32 minutes with a well-struck 20-metre point.
John Hegarty's injury-time point had pushed Wexford in front at the break, and although tempers flared Penrose kept Tyrone in the hunt in the second period, Roe's men came good thanks to Fogarty's late over.
The sides had been level three times in the second half. Wexford now face the winners of the second semi-final between Armagh and Mayo in a Croke Park decider - originally scheduled for next Sunday.
