Galway students complete double
The students of NUI Galway completed a ‘Dangan double’ today as their footballers defeated an under strength Mayo side 2-09 to 1-07 in Section A of the FBD Connacht Football League.
Galway inter county star Michael Meehan was their scoring star, hitting 1-07 – matching the 2004 All-Ireland finalists’ tally on his own.
Both Meehan and Brendan Colleran struck the Mayo net in the first half, as Frank Doherty’s side led 2-01 to 0-06 at the break.
The visitors – missing the likes of Ciaran McDonald and Trevor Mortimer in attack – saw Alan Dillon net in the second half, but NUIG ran out winners, earning a good run-out ahead of their Sigerson Cup first round meeting with UCD on February 2.
Also in Section A, goals from Enda Kenny, Seamus Heneghan and Mark O’Carroll helped Roscommon down Sligo IT 3-07 to 0-12 at Kiltoom.
Sligo gained revenge for last August’s Tommy Murphy Cup final defeat by Clare, as Charlie Harrison’s goal helped them defeat the Banner side 1-11 to 0-9 in their Section B clash in Tubbercurry.
GMIT also edged Leitrim 2-06 to 1-05 at Castlegar, with Des Dolan’s visitors having failed to score in the first half.
NUIG’s hurlers got the better of the Galway Development squad in the Knockairport.com Hurling League yesterday. Centre half-back Tony Og Regan inspired them to three first half goals, and a 3-13 to 0-05 win.
Mayo’s hurlers were undone at Fuerty on Saturday, with Roscommon corner-forward Daragh Mulvey scored 0-08 in his side’s 1-13 to 2-06 victory.
Brendan Hanley also hit a 13th-minute goal for the home side.
Elsewhere, goals from Sligo-Leitrim's Paul Seevers and substitute Fabio Cretaro – younger brother of Sligo Rovers winger Raffael – failed to prevent Sligo IT’s hurlers from powering to a 4-14 to 2-10 win at the College Grounds.
