Maughan angry at McGarrity Allstar omission

Mayo football boss John Maughan has criticised the omission of midfielder Ronan McGarrity from this year's Allstar team.

The Vodafone 2004 Allstar team was named yesterday, and Mayo got two awards (Ciaran McDonald and James Nallen), despite contesting the All-Ireland final.

However, Maughan believes his side's lacklustre display that day ended up costing the county in terms of representatives on the Allstar team.

McGarrity, a basketball-player-turned-footballer, played a key role in the westerners' run to the final.

Maughan said: "I'm disappointed Ronan didn’t get an award because I thought he was the find of the year. I think the fact that we fell so flat in the final mitigated against us. Ronan snuffed Joe Bergin, Seamus O’Neill and Sean Cavanagh out of it and he did a great job on Martin McGrath in the semi-final."

However, he added: "I'm delighted for James Nallen and Ciaran McDonald."
