Offaly set for retirement losses

A number of Offaly footballers look set to retire, following the appointment of Kevin Kilmurray as Faithful senior boss.

The All-Ireland winner was ratified on Tuesday night as the Faithful County’s successor to Gerry Fahy.

However, the players are believed to be unhappy with the appointment, favouring Fahy to remain in the role.

Fahy and his selectors Matt Connor and Mark Plunkett stepped down after winning reappointment by just one vote - claiming it amounted to a vote of no confidence in the management side that guided the Faithful County to Division 1 of the league this year.

The players were angry with the way Fahy had been treated and went on strike, before Eugene McGee mediated a solution to the problem.

One of the players yesterday said: "Put it this way; there could be a lot more retirements than you might expect after a normal season."
