A recurring groin injury has forced Irish captain Padraic Joyce out of next month's two-test Coca-Cola International Rules series against Australia.

The Galway marksman, who scored 11 points in Ireland's last series win three years ago, is expected to be out of action for up to three months, having sustained the injury whilst training.

Acting on medical advice, the three-time All-Star is due to have the injury operated on in the interim period.

Irish manager Pete McGrath is to announce a new team captain in the next couple of days.
