Dolan sees Roscommon through

Roscommon 1-18, Kildare 0-19 (AET)

Six points kicked by Frankie Dolan in extra-time saw Roscommon edge past the Leinster finalists by two points in a dramatic football qualifier at sunny O'Moore Park, Portlaoise this evening.

Dolan, who lines out for his club in the Longford championship tomorrow, kicked 13 points with his first after just 38 seconds of the match from 10 metres out and the tightest of angles.

A sluggish Kildare came back into this game having been one point down at the break, 0-7 to 0-8, with half-forward Paddy Murray notching five of those scores.

The second half saw early drama as Castlemitchell's Tadhg Fennin scored his first point for two games to level matters at 0-9 apiece.

Padraig Brennan tagged on a further Kildare score as they took a two-point lead before Roscommon substitute John Tiernan, a cousin of comedian Tommy, goaled from a Karol Mannion pass.

Midfielder Seamus O'Neill was sent off for his second yellow card by referee Michael Collins on 55 minutes before Brennan brought the sides level for the sixth time at 0-12 to 1-9.

Just after the hour mark, Fennin struck his second score of the game off his left boot and Kildare looked to have the winning of the game - especially after goalkeeper Enda Murphy brilliantly smothered Stephen Lohan's goal attempt with three minutes of normal time remaining.

But Dolan stepped up to point from 30 metres out on the right wing on 73 minutes to send the game into an extra 20-minute period.

The Roscommon forward picked off the first four scores of extra time to give his side the psychological advantage, as Kildare only found their shooting boots through Padraig Brennan in the last minute of extra time's first half.

Referee Collins gave Tadhg Fennin his marching orders for an innocuous challenge with seven minutes left in the game and with that, Tommy Carr's men advanced.
