Leitrim/Tyrone abandoned due to pitch

Leitrim rocked Tyrone with a shock goal at Carrick-on-Shannon tonight, but their dreams of an upset lasted just 13 minutes, with referee Eddie Whelan calling a halt to the action after just 13 minutes.

The local fire brigade was called in to pump pools of water off the pitch at Sean MacDiarmada Park, and after a pitch inspection the Laois official declared the surface playable.

Incessant rain, however, saw conditions progressively worsen, and the All-Ireland Qualifer second round game was abandoned before the end of the first quarter.

Leitrim were ahead by 1-0 to 0-1 at that stage, James Holohan having grabbed an opportunist goal in the second minute, with Stephen O'Neill replying from a free for Tyrone.

"It was dangerous for the players," said referee Whelan. "Conditions had become much worse with the rain since the start of the game."
