Liam Dunne unchallenged for Model job, says Doran

Wexford legend Tony Doran says he’s not aware of any other candidates for the position of senior hurling manager other than current boss, Liam Dunne.

Doran’s own club Buffers Alley are understood to have backed Dunne to remain on in charge, while Doran himself was brought in by the 1996 All-Ireland winner to motivate the players earlier in the season. Nominations for the position close today and names such as Jerry Wallace and Frank Flannery, who currently manages Dunne’s club Oulart-the-Ballagh and coaches Cork, have been mentioned. However, Dunne also has the backing of his own club as well as a couple of other prominent clubs. Doran said: “Liam has been nominated and we hear talk about other interested parties but I’ve heard nothing about definite names other than Liam. It’s all just hearsay.”

Doran, yesterday inducted into the GAA’s hall of fame along with Galway’s John Connolly, Kerry’s John O’Keeffe and the late Dermot Earley Snr of Roscommon, says it’s a matter of opinion whether Wexford have made strides in recent years.
