Brian Herlihy urges Cork fans to support minors

Cork minor football manager Brian Herlihy has called on Rebel supporters to travel in their numbers to Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday.

With no Cork team in the senior decider, Herlihy is concerned at the prospect of a poor Cork following in Killarney, especially when the presence of a large home contingent is a nailed on certainty.

“This is Kerry’s backyard. There will be a good atmosphere there and I hope that as many Cork people as possible will travel for the 12-noon start. Every bit of support is vital for the team, particularly for young fellas. Hopefully, we will give them something to shout about.”

Herlihy is understandably wary of Peter Keane’s side, particularly when so many were involved last year.

“We saw them against Clare. They have 12 of last year’s panel.

“We have one goalkeeper and a sub. They are the All-Ireland champions for the last two years.

“St Brendan’s fairly romped the Hogan Cup. There are very high hopes for this team in Kerry. This match will tell us where we are. They are the benchmark at this grade.”

Centre-forward Sean O’Shea and full-forward David Clifford have been particularly impressive en-route to the decider and will take watching.

“Absolutely. A trap that people fall into, though, is that they put all their eggs into one basket and focus on marking one or two players. These lads are their better-known players, but if you take your eye off the ball with regard to the others, anyone of them could be a match winner.”
