Dual players back in Premier hurling fold

Tipperary minor hurling boss Liam Cahill has moved to secure the services of four dual players for the remainder of the season.

Colin English, Stephen Nolan, John Lyons, and Michael Purcell were members of the county’s minor football set-up in 2016 but the quartet are now free to play hurling after an early championship exit.

The minor footballers were dumped out of the Munster championship by Limerick in April, despite having contested provincial and All-Ireland finals last year.

Cahill issued an ultimatum earlier in the year that it was one code, but not both, for prospective panel members but with the footballers’ season ending prematurely, he has introduced the quartet to his hurling camp ahead of the Munster semi-final with Cork on June 30.

English, Nolan, and Lyons played against Cork and Limerick in the Munster MFC as Tipp lost both games, but Purcell didn’t see action in either match.

English, from the Fr Sheehy’s club, was one of the stand-out performers for the minor footballers at wing back, while Drom & Inch player Nolan operated on the left flank in the half-back line.

English kicked a point in each game against Cork and Limerick, as Lyons, from Grangemockler-Ballyneale, chipped in with a point from play against Cork and six frees in the Limerick defeat.

Purcell is a Thurles Sarsfields player and a graduate from the Durlas Óg hurling nursery in the town.
