Galway SHC: Sarsfields make winning start to title defence

Champions Sarsfields made a winning start to the defence of their Galway SHC title when they beat 2013 All-Ireland winners St Thomas’, 1-18 to 1-15 at Kenny Park in Athenry.

Sarsfields led 0-11 to 0-7 at half-time, and Alan Ward’s second-half goal sealed the win, with Eanna Burke striking a consolation goal for St Thomas’.

Jamie Ryan got the vital goal for Loughrea as they ground out a 1-17 to 0-18 win over Turloughmore.

Four goals were enough to give Gort victory in their clash with Castlegar.

Wayne Walsh, Albert Mullins, Richie Cummins and Paul Killilea all found the net for Gort but Castlegar showed impressive scoring also — Ger Farragher hit 11 points while goals from Kevin Keane and Enda Concannon helped them to a 2-22 to 4-12 win.

2014 All-Ireland champions Portumna beat last year’s county finalists Craughwell by 2-13 to 0-16 in Loughrea, with Martin and Patrick Dolphin getting the goals.

Galway’s Cyril Donnellan was amongst the goals as was Emmet Ward, in Padraig Pearses’ 2-12 to 0-16 win over Ardrahan while Cappataggle had a 2-15 to 1-12 victory over Liam Mellows.

In section B, Galway sharpshooter Jason Flynn shot 11 points for Tommy Larkins, as they beat Beagh 0-14 to 0-13. Shane Maloney hit 1-7 for Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry, and Paul Gordon got the other goal, in a 2-22 to 0-9 win over Carnmore.

Niall Mannion scored 1-4 for Moycullen but Craig Kennedy bagged a goal for Abbeyknockmoy, in their 1-17 to 1-14 win. Cathal Dervan and Finian Coone scored the goals for Mullagh, in their 2-18 to 0-15 win against Athenry. Iomar Creaven grabbed the winning goal for Killimordaly as they beat Kiltormer 1-18 to 0-13.
