Meath board to object to EirGrid U21 sponsorship

A letter outlining Meath’s grievances — following heated debate on the issue of the north-south electricity interconnector project at last week’s county board meeting — will be submitted to the GAA in the coming days.
Electricity providers EirGrid are in the process of attempting to gain planning permission for the controversial interconnector project which will run between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
They wish to install several hundred pylons throughout the north-east from Meath to Tyrone.
Many of the pylons will run close to GAA grounds in Meath including the county’s training centre at Dunganny.
Meath GAA have been allocated time at an unspecified date to speak at An Bord Pleanala’s oral hearing on the project which is currently underway.
County board sources have indicated that, in line with the wishes of clubs, Meath GAA will voice their opposition to the works going ahead in the current format on the grounds of potential safety concerns.
The letter to association’s top brass will be similarly critical of the decision to accept sponsorship from EirGrid.
It remains to be seen what effect Meath’s opposition to EirGrid’s sponsorship will have on the U-21 deal which was struck for a three-year period in early 2015.
EirGrid were also title sponsors of last year’s International Rules test at Croke Park.
