Limerick legend Eamonn Cregan has described the GAA’s fixtures calendar as “madness” and is unhappy that the country’s elite players are “playing hurling in shite conditions”.

Cregan, a 1973 All-Ireland SHC medallist, is preparing a depleted Mary Immaculate College team for today’s (Thursday) Fitzgibbon Cup opener against NUIG – and the former Limerick and Offaly boss doesn’t agree with the timing of the competition.

Cregan said: “Madness. It has always been at this time of the year but we have poor weather at the moment, there’s the problem of getting pitches and fellas training in the mud. We don’t do any physical training with the players, you can’t, you’d kill them if you tried that.
