Galway clubs have until next Monday night to come up with nominations for the vacant position, with former Clarinbridge manager Micheal Donoghue the favourite to take over, while Cuala manager Mattie Kenny is also in contention.

Both are former Galway hurlers and are likely to lead the race, but it has been confirmed that restrictions have not been placed on who clubs nominate.

“The clubs can nominate anyone, inside or outside the county, provided they have the permission of that person,” said a spokesperson for the Galway county committee.

“Clubs have been asked to make the nominations by next Monday, no restrictions have been put in place, and we would hope to have the new manager in position prior to Christmas,” he added.

Meanwhile, promising Galway footballer Peadar Óg Ó Griofa faces a battle to be fit for action during 2016 after suffering his third cruciate knee ligament injury. The talented 23-year old has had to battle back from several major injuries before finally making his senior championship debut earlier this year against New York.

But he now faces another lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a third cruciate injury playing for his club Micheal Breathnachs.

The student garda, who has damaged both knees over the past few seasons, has undergone surgery and now faces the long road to recovery.
