Eoin Cadogan eyes American destination for International Rules
The Douglas man, one of Ireland’s best defenders in Saturday’s victory over Australia, has given his support to the idea of bringing one of the games Stateside.
“I thought the game was close and it was probably something that was needed.
“The tests can only go from strength to strength and if it is in the States it would be great for the Irish contingent there to see the Irish guys. Hopefully it will happen next year.”
Having played in both tests in Australia four years ago, Cadogan was delighted to get another opportunity at the hybrid game.
While victorious in Melbourne and on the Gold Coast in 2011, the former Cork dual player was reduced to cameo roles in both and was keen to make a more significant impression on this occasion.
“I probably got more game-time and I was a bit more involved. I’m honoured, really, to get the Ireland jersey. Whether you were interested in soccer or rugby, everybody has got involved when Ireland are playing and this was no different.
“It’s great for my club and my family. Those words sometimes can just be thrown out there at times but it really means a lot.
“I was delighted when Joe (Kernan) gave me the call. I was carrying a bit of a niggle at the start of the season and probably didn’t finish the club and championship because of it but Joe gave me the four or five weeks to rehab it.
“He was very fair and the players are a great bunch. We got to know each other a lot better, fellas who you’d be getting stuck into week-in and week-out. Being involved with them playing for my country is something I will cherish.”
