Ger Lane pledges say for all in hunt for new Cork hurling manager
A sub-committee to find Jimmy Barry-Murphy’s replacement was established at Tuesday night’s board meeting, along similar lines to that set up for the county football manager’s position. Lane hopes that the canvassing of views will prove fruitful.
“It will be the same route as with the football,” he said.
“Clubs are being sent nomination forms in the next few days and pretty much anybody can be nominated, people can nominate themselves if they wish.
“We’re not imposing a deadline but we would be looking to get things done as quickly as we possibly can. It’s not always easy to get people together to discuss it but we are conscious that the county championships are nearing their end and we’d be looking to bring the process to a conclusion around then.” Former Cork hurlers Charlie McCarthy, Seán O’Gorman and Pat Mulcahy will feature on the committee and Lane is happy to have three people of such high calibre.
“I think that we have three good people on board,” he said.
“They have all won All-Ireland medals and have been involved with underage teams too. They have all been through it at the highest level and they know exactly what it takes to be successful.
“Charlie was captain in 1978 for the three in a row, Seán was on the team that won the first part of the double in 1990 and Pat featured in 2004 and ’05, so you’re covering a very wide range there.” As on the football sub-committee, Lane and the county secretary Frank Murphy join the three former players on the committee. Lane believes that the pair’s presence is important.
“I think it’s fair to expect that the chairman and secretary would be on the committee,” he said.
“At the end of the day, the manager is the responsibility of the board and we’re entitled to have a say in who will be in charge.” The football sub-committee is continuing its work, with Lane optimistic regarding its progress.
“It’s similar, we’re looking to get things done as soon as possible,” he said.
“We’re working through it and hopefully things will push on in the next week or 10 days. We all appreciate that it’s something which must be finalised soon, other counties are getting things in order for next year.”
