David Scannell goal swings it Duhallow's way

Duhallow 1-11 Newcestown 0-9: Predictably, the only goal scored in yesterday’s fourth-round Cork SFC clash in Carrigadrohid proved decisive in determining Carbery Rangers’ opponents in the quarter-final would be Duhallow. And, it’s timing – 11 minutes from time after scores had been level seven times – was all the more critical for the reason Newcestown registered three wides around the same time.

Bemoaning the loss of ‘two or three decent scoring chances’ before the break, Newcestown selector Tom Wilson agreed the goal was ‘the game changer.’ “We were hoping to get a goal, we got caught for a goal instead,” he said. “That was it. In a low-scoring, tough, tight game, a goal was always going to win it.”

For his part, Duhallow manager Ned English stressed the importance of substitutions made, commenting: “We brought on a couple of fresh legs and they definitely turned the game.” And, he remarked it was all the more pleasing in view of the challenge in preparing for the game.
