Dean Rock says free count Dublin’s own fault

Dean Rock has taken a different view to Jim Gavin about the refereeing performance of Padraig O’Sullivan in Sunday’s All-Ireland quarter-final.

Asked about the official’s display, Gavin felt there was a greater need for consistency. Although he shares the manager’s frustrations about the legitimacy of Fermanagh’s first goal, Rock says the free count — 21 to four against them — was largely of their own making.

“It was just probably some clumsy tackling on our behalf. I don’t think there was anything wrong from the referee’s point of view.”

Regarding Stephen Cluxton’s own goal when he was pushed over the line by Sean Quigley, Rock reviewed: “I just saw it on the big screen. I just saw it was a barge. I didn’t know what to make of it but it was given and we reacted well from it with a goal.”

Ballymun Kickhams man Rock is enjoying his football as an ever-present in the team.

“I’m in a great place. I’ve played every game since the O’Byrne Cup this year. I got into the team and I got the jersey and I’m just happy to do what I can.

“Everyone loves getting game and a lot of game time and I’ve managed to do that this year. It’s just working for me at the minute and I’m just loving every minute of it.”

Whether it’s Mayo or Donegal in August 30’s All-Ireland semi-final, Rock appreciates the task ahead of Dublin as they face Division 1 opposition for the first time this summer.

“Regardless of who we play, we’re going to be playing better quality opposition. We’ve a lot of work on over the next four weeks. But we’ll be ready.”
