Selection headaches for Galway manager

Galway manager Anthony Cunningham says that it augurs well for the championship that it is so difficult to pick the team to take on Dublin on Sunday.

Selection headaches for Galway manager

Cunningham has a number of injury problems with the likes of three unrelated Burkes — David, Daithi and Niall — all ruled out of Sunday’s clash at Croke Park, but the competition for places has ensured he has plenty of selection headaches.

“It’s a good position, a lot of lads have come through and are pushing for places and that’s the way we want to have it.

“No matter who you have in there, you always want someone pushing him for that jersey.

“It is good from that perspective. We have had Padraig Mannion, Greg Lally, Gearoid McInerney who would have been new and had strong performances in the league.

“It is brilliant to be getting new players every year. It’s second season for the likes of Cathal Mannion and Jason Flynn and that’s very, very good for us,” said Cunningham.

This is his fourth year in charge of the Tribesmen and knows that victory is vital on Sunday to kickstart their campaign.

They have had a couple of disappointing campaigns having come within a whisker of lifting the All-Ireland three years ago before going down to Kilkenny in a replay.

“There is not much between a lot of the sides. It’s a huge, huge match. To me it’s winner takes all. It sets you up with a huge championship campaign during the summer.” He is waiting until this evening to finalise his side. “We need to wait to give a few knocks and bits and pieces to sort themselves out.”
