Tipp consider next move after Callanan appeal fails

The Tipperary county board may yet turn to the CAC in their bid to have Seamus Callanan’s red card against Offaly overturned.

Tipp consider next move after Callanan appeal fails

Callanan was sent off in last Sunday’s Allianz Hurling League quarter-final for a apparent off-the-ball incident with Offaly’s Dermot Shortt.

Tipperary contested the decision by Wicklow referee John Keenan, but the GAA Hearings Committee rejected the appeal, stating:

“The Hearings Committee found that evidence provided was not sufficiently compelling to rebut the referee’s report therefore the Infraction was proven.”

Callanan will now face a one-match ban and miss the league semi-final with Waterford, but Tipp may take the matter further.

Defender Cathal Barrett, who was also sent off in the match, also had his appeal against his first yellow card turned down.

This morning, acting Tipp PRO Joe Bracken confirmed, in a statement, that the county would wait for an explanation of both rulings before deciding on appeals to the Central Appeals Committee.

“Tipperary's efforts at central hearings failed to have Seamus Callanan's red card and Cathal Barrett's first yellow rescinded and are awaiting the final wording of the committee decision before deciding on further action.”

Croke Park will be understandably keen to back the judgement of one of the newer inter-county hurling officials, but earlier this week, former Tipp player and selector Ken Hogan criticised Shortt’s handling of the match.

“It just didn’t work out for him. It wasn’t a good day for anybody. We all left the ground with a sour taste in the mouth because of things that occurred during the game. It wasn’t nice,” Hogan told Tipp FM.
