Mayo County Board will issue their new manager with a series of conditions he must adhere to before taking the job.

Mayo board puts tight restrictions on new boss

The board, which met on Wednesday night to discuss the vacant position, are inviting clubs to nominate candidates for the position. However, following a number of disagreements with James Horan during his term in charge, the board will be looking for assurances in writing on a number of issues, namely the availability of players for club games.

“There is a special Croke Park charter for appointing a county manager,” county chairman Paddy McNicholas told the Connaught Telegraph. “But we are entitled to add to this charter and we will be drawing up criteria for all the applicants for the job.”

Those additions are also likely to feature a more stringent approach to budgeting issues than over the past four years. However, the Irish Examiner understands if the new manager requires additional funding, the matter will be discussed.

Noel Connelly has emerged as a strong contender for the position in recent weeks, given the players’ and board’s reluctance to give the job to Kevin McStay should he bring Liam McHale with him. Both men are likely to be interviewed first though, with 2013 All-Ireland winning minor manager Enda Gilvarry also in the running.

Meanwhile there was bad news for Mayo supporters yesterday when it emerged that Cian Hanley, a star performer on the minor scene for the past two years, is joining the Brisbane Lions as an internationally rookie.

Hanley’s brother Pearce is a franchise player Down Under now and the club reported the signing of his brother as a “massive coup”.
