McCloy ‘continuing to improve’ in hospital

There was good news about the recovery of former Derry captain Kevin McCloy yesterday, with the 35-year-old believed to be conscious and speaking to his family.

In a statement released by his family, they confirmed his condition was still stable and that he was “continuing to improve”.

His former inter-county team-mate and friend Paddy Bradley also tweeted last night that the 2007 All star full-back was making “good progress”.

“Was up at hospital. The big man continues to make good progress and the news is positive,” said Bradley.

McCloy, who captained Derry to a National League title in 2008, collapsed on the pitch during a club championship game on Wednesday night.

He was captaining Lavey when he went to take a free-kick after just 10 minutes, but collapsed as he took it.

Paramedics rushed to his aid and three doctors, Kathryn Davey, Niamh Collins (who are sisters from Magherafelt and were there to watch their brother and Niamh’s husband in action against Lavey) and Ronan Keogh tended to the injured player.

A defibrillator was used to resuscitate McCloy and he was transferred to Altnagelvin Hospital on Wednesday night, where he remains.

However, his condition has improved and while there is still caution to be urged, he has regained consciousness and is recovering.

“Kevin is stable and his condition is continuing to improve, whilst receiving care and attention at Altnagelvin Hospital, where his progress is being monitored,” said the statement from his family.

“Kevin’s wife Cathy and family are very thankful and happy for the care and attention he has been receiving.

“The family is very thankful for those who attended to Kevin on Wednesday night at Owenbeg GAA grounds. We would also like to thank all those who have sent good wishes and prayers.”
