Cork-Waterford replay won’t be televised live
The Munster Council are in discussions with RTÉ about the game being streamed online.
However, RTÉ have confirmed they are not in a position to show the game on June 8 as they are obliged to show the Roscommon-Mayo and Dublin-Laois games.
They would also have been prohibited from showing the game on Saturday, June 7, as Sky Sports are showing the Leinster SHC quarter-final between Kilkenny and Offaly in Nowlan Park, their first live Championship broadcast.
Munster chairman Robert Frost said: “They hadn’t pencilled in for a replay. Sure, nobody could pencil in for a replay and they had to go ahead with their schedule.”
With ticket prices reduced as well, the Munster Council expect a larger crowd, in excess of 20,000, than the disappointing 16,025 that were in Thurles at the weekend. Unlike last year when they didn’t show the Munster semi-finals, RTÉ will this year show all five of the province’s hurling championship games.
However, Frost said there was concern among council delegates that too many games are being televised and having an adverse impact on crowds at club games.
“To be honest about it, we had a discussion at the last Council meeting and there were people there that made out there were too many games going out on television.
“Then you hear people about Sky and stuff, those who are for and against it.
“It’s great to get exposure that we’re getting but there are an awful lot of matches going out live on television.”
Frost is expecting this Sunday’s Tipperary-Limerick clash to be more attractive than the first Cork-Waterford game with a crowd estimated around 25,000 in Semple Stadium.
