Na Piarsaigh find their stride

Limerick and Munster club hurling champions Na Piarsaigh opened their title defence in fine style yesterday with a 2-20 to 1-11 win over Kilmallock in Bruff.

Na Piarsaigh trailed 1-10 to 1-9 but turned on the style in the second half when they restricted 2012 winners Kilmallock to a point. A Gavin O’Mahony goal helped Kilmallock to the interval lead but a Kevin Downes goal kept Na Piarsaigh in touch.

In the second half, the champions took over and had a second goal from Kevin Ryan.

Last season’s beaten finalists Adare were toppled by Doon in Kilmallock with a Micheal Ryan goal midway through the second half the decisive score. His side were 0-7 to 0-6 ahead at half time with Cathal McNamara leading the scoring with three frees.

Declan Hannon finished with 0-8 for Adare and his early second half points had his team ahead until Ryan goaled. Michael Barry and Mike Fitzgerald added late points to ensure a 1-15 to 0-10 win for Doon.

Ahane and Patrickswell played out a thriller yesterday with a late Tom Morrissey point snatching a 1-20 to 1-19 win for Ahane. Niall Moran hit 14 points for the winners.

Also on Saturday, Seanie Tobin hit 0-9 as Murroe-Boher beat Knockainey 1-16 to 1-7. Murroe-Boher were 0-12 to 0-1 ahead at half time with Knockainey down to 14-men. Pat Tobin hit the winners’ goal while Mark Cleary hit the net for Murroe-Boher.

Ballybrown were 1-20 to 1-13 winners over Granagh-Ballingarry. They were 0-13 to 1-7 ahead at the break. Alan O’Connor hit 0-11 while David Byrne’s was the winners’ goalscorer.

In the opening game on Friday evening, South Liberties were 2-15 to 0-8 winners over Effin. Ciarán Carberry hit a goal in each half for Liberties who were 1-10 to 0-3 ahead at half time.

South Liberties had 0-6 from free-taker Mark Keane and three from county minor Barry Nash.
