John Brennan, having guided them to an Ulster final the previous summer, was finding the second year a struggle.

They led by 0-8 to 0-1 in Westmeath on the final day in 2012, a result that would have kept them up. By the end of the game, there had been a 15-point swing and they lost by 1-15 to 0-10.
